The festival of festivals has already started in Muxía. The festivities of the “Virxe da Barca,” with the large procession next Sunday 15 as the main course, began this morning at 12:00 p.m. with the traditional 21 “palenque” fireworks and the customary masses and novenas. During the morning, the festivities continued with music in the streets, and at noon, with the performance of the Charada Duo to liven up the vermouth session. In the evening, the traditional outdoor dance will take place, also with the Charada Duo as the protagonists.
The festival, which has the support of the Xunta de Galicia, will continue on the 35th anniversary of its declaration as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 1989 until Monday, September 16, with an extensive liturgical and cultural program.
A full programme of religious and leisure activities
There will be five days of celebration with a large musical line-up, in addition to religious acts. Apart from the novenas that take place every day, there will be the Spanish pop group of the eighties and nineties Carlos Bau & 80 razones (Friday 13), the renowned orchestras Olympus and Atenas (Saturday 14) and the veteran group Los Satélites, Escaparate & Alcazar and O tren da unha (Sunday 15).
The Charanga NBA will be in charge of the opening speech on Friday 13 at 9:00 p.m. in the Praza do Cabo da Vila, after almost 40 years of uninterrupted performances in the town on this occasion. “We started performing here since our foundation, we feel at home,” said Julio Pan, president of the Charanga NBA Cultural Association.
Within the liturgical program, on Saturday and Sunday the schedules of religious services will be increased, highlighting the solemn Sunday mass at 1:00 p.m., presided over by Manuel J. Fernández Formoso, canon of the Cathedral of Santiago. The Eucharist will be followed by the classic procession of “Nosa Señora da Barca” to the Muxía quay. The image of Our Lady will return to the Sanctuary on Monday 16 with a procession at 12:30 p.m. to the Parish Church.
The event will bring a multitude of recreational initiatives to locals and visitors with the great fireworks session (Saturday 14) and the largest firecrackers display in all of Galicia (Sunday 15) as a brilliant culmination. At the same time, vermouth sessions, parades, DJs and concerts will liven up each day. The complete program can be consulted on the official website of the festival (www.romeriadabarcademuxia.com) and on social networks (@romeriadabarcamuxia).
