What is it?

Come to one of the most famous religious festivals in Galicia. Surrounded by symbolism and shrouded in legends, the Sanctuary of A Barca de Muxía hosts a unique festival every year on the Sunday after September 8, a tradition that dates back to the end of the Middle Ages.

Muxía’sVirgen de la Barca” Festival brings together thousands of worshippers every year from all over the country, and even from abroad, to entrust themselves to Our Lady in search of a cure for their ills. According to legend, the Virgin of the Boat appeared to the Apostle James in Muxía to encourage him to continue extending his evangelizing work.

Other points of worship near the Sanctuary are the stones of Abalar, of the Cadrís (of the kidneys) and of the Head, to which healing properties are attributed, in addition to the Stones of the Lovers and of the Rudder. A devotion that may have its origins in pre-Romanesque times and that was incorporated into religious rituals with the process of Christianization.

Declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 1989, the celebration today features an extensive program. It combines liturgical acts and leisure activities, as well as the largest firecrackers display in Galicia.
