Muxía/Things to do/Top 10 places

Nature, ethnography, culture, landscapes, gastronomy… Muxía has everything you need to make your visit one of those that you will remember for life. Here we present the 10 must-see places in our municipality.

Sanctuary of the Virgin of A Barca and its surroundings

This is the main point of reference, especially if you come to the “Virgen de la Barca” Festival. You will be surprised by its incredible surroundings, at the foot of the Atlantic Ocean, which will enable you to immerse yourself among magical rocks and beautiful sea views. You can also admire the Monument of A Ferida (The Wound), an impressive sculpture erected in memory of the Prestige disaster, which has become a symbol of the resilience of the Costa da Morte. Its location in a privileged natural setting makes it even more impressive.

Cape Touriñán

This is the westernmost point of mainland Spain, a place where the ruggedness of the Costa da Morte is felt in every corner. But what makes Touriñán truly special is its daily spectacle: it is the last place in continental Europe where the sun says goodbye. Witnessing how the sun plunges into the Atlantic, dyeing the sky with vibrant colours, is a magical and unforgettable experience. This lighthouse, solitary and majestic, watches over this Land’s End of impressive cliffs and endless views.

Old Monastery of Moraime

This church, a magnificent example of the Costa da Morte’s Romanesque style, transports you to the 12th and 13th centuries. Located in a quiet rural setting, San Xiao de Moraime stands out for its elegant simplicity. Look at its main façade, with its sculpted capitals and beautiful archivolts that invite you to travel back in time, reflecting the mastery of medieval stonemasons. Inside, the atmosphere of seclusion invites contemplation. This place was part of an important medieval monastery, and its walls still hold stories and legends.

The beaches

With 17 estuaries, the beaches are one of the must-sees during your visit to the “Virgen de la Barca” Festival. From sheltered coves to extensive sandy beaches lashed by the waves, Muxía features a diversity that surprises. Among the most outstanding beaches are Nemiña (a paradise for surfers and known for its powerful waves), Area Maior (one of the most emblematic, perfect for long walks by the sea), or those of Lourido and O Lago (ideal to enjoy with the family, given their calm waters). All of them stand out due to their exceptional natural surroundings.

Monte Facho Viewpoint

Also known as Monte Facho de Lourido, this viewpoint rises more than 300 metres above the Atlantic and forms a strategic point where you can enjoy an incredible panoramic spectacle. From here, you can contemplate the silhouette of the fishing village of Muxía and the majesty of the Sanctuary of Virxe da Barca, an icon of this magical region. The view to the south is endless, where Cape Touriñán emerges as the westernmost point of mainland Spain, and on clear days, even Cape Vilán looms on the horizon.

Conger eel dryers

Among our most unique ethnographic spaces, the Conger Eel Dryers (Os Cascón and A Pedriña) stand out, being the only ones left in the Iberian Peninsula. Located in the municipal capital, near the urban area, they are a living testimony of Muxía’s fishing tradition. Also of great interest is the place of Ozón, with its cruceiros (stone cross) and hórreo (granary), which arouses the curiosity of all visitors.

Negro River trail

Located in Os Muíños, this riverside trail stands out for its numerous watermills. Here, nature and history come together on a path surrounded by lush vegetation and seventeen restored watermills. These traditional buildings, witnesses to the area’s agricultural past, allow you to admire the ingenuity of yesteryear and how man harnessed the power of water. The trail ends at the spectacular mouth of the river, at the Area Maior – Os Muíños Beach, forming the perfect end to a walk that combines the serenity of the forest with the immensity of the ocean.

08 O Castro

Caldeiras do Castro

This is one of the most fascinating areas of Muxía, where nature is transformed into a spectacle worth seeing. Its privileged location turns the river into a series of waterfalls and natural pools that sculpt the rock, creating a unique landscape that captivates every visitor. In this serene setting, you will find the charming chapel of Santo Outel de O Castro and a cozy picnic area, perfect for making a stop, resting and fully immersing yourself in the tranquillity of nature. It is the ideal place to disconnect and recharge.

Hórreo (granary) of San Martiño de Ozón

It is a magnificent example of traditional Galician architecture; a structure that reflects popular wisdom and the need to protect crops. Ingeniously built to ensure ventilation and prevent humidity and rodents, this granary shows you in a tangible way how corn, the basis of our ancestors’ diet, was preserved. Next to it, stands the Church of San Martiño de Ozón, which completes this ensemble. Although simpler, this church forms the perfect setting for the granary, creating an idyllic and serene picture that invites contemplation.

Port and fish market

The port area of Muxía is a great place to take a nice walk. In addition to seeing different types of boats – from trawlers to luxurious sailboats – you can also learn a little more about the world of the sea by going to the fish market. The impressive graphite on one of its side walls will catch your attention. This tour can be combined with a stroll along the cobbled streets of the town centre.
