The opening speech of the “Virgen de la Barca” Festival has marked the official start of our festivities since 1989, the year in which it was declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest.
The honour of being the first opening speaker fell to Xusto López Carril, a resident of Muxía and Radio Galega presenter. After a brief pause, the tradition was resumed in 1993 with José Luis García López, also from Muxía, and in 1994 with the Corcubión researcher Luis Lamela García, who immortalized the essence of our region with the words: “Stone, sea and wind. Life and tradition.” Since then, every year a prominent personality from fields as diverse as the media, culture, literature, medicine, university, sport or entertainment, has had the privilege of opening the Festival. Figures such as the well-known Radio Galega presenter Luis Rial have left their mark. Despite their varied origins, all the opening speakers share a deep love and bond with Muxía, making this speech a moment full of emotion and meaning.
To enrich the experience of visitors to the Festival, the program includes additional initiatives designed for all audiences. These activities seek to celebrate and value the main attractions of Muxía, its rich tradition and its vast heritage. You will find everything from activities designed especially for kids, ensuring family fun, to cultural and gastronomic events that will invite you to savour the essence of our town and discover its history in a unique way.
