The “Virgen de la Barca de Muxía” Festival, as we know it today, has its deep roots in the Middle Ages, a period of transformation where the ancestral worship of the sacred rocks around the sanctuary merged with the Christian faith.
Although the first written mentions that directly allude to a pilgrimage in Muxía date back to the early 17th century, the belief in rocks as witnesses of the miraculous appearance of the Virgin in a stone boat dates back to the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th.
