Shrouded in mysticism, the history of the Sanctuary of A Barca is directly linked to the apparition of the Saint in this place. Legend has it that here, in a moment of unease, the Apostle James was encouraged by the Virgin Mary. She appeared before him, arriving in a stone boat guided by angels, to infuse him with new strength in his evangelizing mission.
This episode gave rise to the remains of the boat that ran aground on the coast, as if it were a divine sign. The materialization of this miracle is found in the so-called healing rocks located in the surroundings of the temple and which have been venerated for several centuries.
There are three unique elements: the Pedra dos Cadrís (the sail), the Pedra de Abalar (the hull) and the Pedra do Timón (the rudder). Since ancient times, these rocks have been places of worship and are attributed with magical properties, especially related to fertility. They are the living connection between faith, nature and history.
The legend of the Virgin of A Barca has been told from generation to generation, weaving a tapestry of symbolism and devotion that permeates every corner of this place. In fact, as early as the 15th century, a Polish nobleman named Nicholas of Popielovo recorded his amazement when he saw in Muxía “a destroyed ship, made of pure stone with a mast and a hanging sail, both made of stone.” Faith in the Virgin of A Barca transcended borders!
